Follow-up is that most important last step in the interview process. After you leave the interview, immediately write down key issues covered in the interview. Think of the qualifications the employer is looking for and match your strengths to them.  Follow-up now is critical. A "thank you" letter should be written no later than 24 hours after the interview.

Normally a "thank you" note or letter is sent by mail, however in today's work environment, an email or fax may even be substituted. The important issue now is that you send some type of acknowledgement to the company recruiter; even a short note is better than nothing.  Thank the interviewer for their time, reiterate your interest in the job and re-emphasize a few of your "strong points".
