Extended Benefits
Unemployment
Benefits extended in Kentucky
Legislation to
extend unemployment insurance benefits was signed into law by
President Obama December 17, 2010, ensuring unemployment
insurance benefits will be extended until January, 2012.
The extension
is retroactive. The bill
extends the period during which individuals may qualify for
Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) from week ending
November 27, 2010 to the week ending December 31, 2011.
Individuals qualifying by that week may claim weeks of EUC
through the week ending June 9, 2012.
*EUC
claimants who have never filed for EUC can file new EUC claims
as of 12-17-2010*.
Previous EUC
claimants whose balance exhausted after the end of the
program in November 2010 now have the balance of their next
tier available. They will be able to request benefits via the
VRU at
877-369-5984.
There is no
increase in the number of weeks of EUC.
EUC will remain a 53-week program,
broken down into four tiers. Tier one is 20 weeks, tier two is
14 weeks, tier three is 13 weeks and tier four is six weeks.
The
Extended Benefit (EB) program has also triggered back on in
Kentucky. *EB
claims may be filed by those who have exhausted regular
unemployment insurance and EUC as of 12-22-2010.*
Existing EB
claimants can now claim their two weeks as usual. EB claims must
be made via the internet at
kewes.ky.gov.
The
non-reduction rule that
was in place under the previous extension remains in place. The
non reduction rule applies to claimants who qualify for
a regular unemployment insurance claim while enrolled in the EUC
program. If the new UI claim is $100 or 25% less than the EUC
claim, claimants may remain enrolled in EUC. If you have
questions about this part of the extension, please contact your
local office.
